Internationally renowned photographer Mark Mawson, whose work was projected onto Buckingham Palace during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, has been nominated as the first British artist ever to receive the prestigious Futurum Award which will be presented to him in Monte Carlo by Prince Albert II on 25th October 2018.
He was chosen from a shortlist of ten worldwide candidates for the annual award which recognises the elite talent of artists who combine art and new technologies, and he follows in the footsteps of last year’s winner, celebrated American glass sculptor Dale Chihuly.
“Once again, choosing the winner was not easy,” said Futurum’s President Madame Kawther Al Abood. “In the end it was Mawson’s talent and creations that won us all over with his colours and ability to interpret abstract concepts through the use of innovative techniques.”
The accolade is further affirmation of Mawson’s exploratative and audacious talent which has become widely acknowledged with many of his images now collectable pieces of art.
Following an early career in photojournalism, Mawson progressed to shooting fashion and celebrity portraiture and photographed members of the Royal Family.
He found his metier when, in 2004, he began shooting liquid images of paints in water using high speed photography. This led to the launch of his “Aqueous” series which subsequently evolved organically with the use of a variety of paint, oils and dyes to create bursts of colourful clouds and exquisitely ethereal landscapes. In 2012 a video of one of his most dynamic pieces was the backdrop for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations
Of the Futurum Award, Mawson said: “I was lost for words when I received the phone call to say that I’d won. It’s so rewarding when your work is recognised by such an exclusive association as this and I feel very honoured to be invited to Monte Carlo to receive the award.”
