Agnès Varda creates First UK commission for Liverpool Biennial 2018

Agnès Varda has established herself as one of the great figures of the New Wave and a pioneer in world cinema with a career spanning six decades. In her 90th year, Varda will present her first new commission in the UK for Liverpool Biennial 2018, the largest festival of contemporary visual arts in the UK (14 July – 28 October 2018), in partnership with FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) Liverpool.

Commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and FACT, 3 Mouvements (working title) is a three-channel video installation combining extracts from her films Vagabond (1985), Documenteur(1981) and The Gleaners (2000). Together with 3 Mouvements, Varda will show an installation comprising her seminal film Ulysse (1982) and a photograph she took in 1954, as well as a large-scale photographic installation entitled 5 rêveurs (2012). The presentation will be accompanied by a programme of weekly screenings of her works and a personally curated selection of films to accompany her own (every Wednesday from 18 July to 17 October 2018, 6.30pm).

On the 10th edition of Liverpool Biennial, entitled Beautiful world, where are you?, Agnès Varda said: “Beautiful world of art, what can we do to make it beautiful? – that is where I think it is our duty as artists to be conscious, but also build something that is more beautiful than ugly.”

Liverpool Biennial will mark its 20th anniversary this year with more than 40 artists from 22 countries participating in the programme for the 10th edition curated by Kitty Scott, Carol and Morton Rapp Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Art Gallery of Ontario, and Sally Tallant, Director of Liverpool Biennial.

Liverpool Biennial’s Agnès Varda presentation coincides with a BFI Southbank retrospective of her films running until 31 July 2018. Faces Places, directed by Agnès Varda and JR, will be released in UK cinemas by Curzon Artificial Eye from 14 September 2018.
