‘One good thing about music, when it hits you feel no pain’
Bob Marley surely had to know that that’s not the only good thing about music. For music is a universal language that has the power to shape and form our personalities, likes, loves, how we deal with situations, how we relate to the world and how we relate to each other.
I cannot imagine my life without music. From a very early age when I used to reverently paw my way through my father’s vinyl collection, to now, I really cannot imagine my personal landscape without my own personal list of ‘the best albums of all time.’
At the very top of the list is Love’s ‘Forever Changes’, which I’ve written about exclusively for this issue. Reaching out to the band’s guitarist Johnny Echols for an interview for my feature was my own personal musical equivalent of ‘call the Lord, and the Lord shall answer.’ Johnny took me behind the scene of my favourite album, and I’m delighted to let you into this part of my universe. Hopefully you’ll join me in my wanton adoration of this album above all others.
Elsewhere in the issue, we welcome Guest Editor-at-Large Ralph Barker whose mind is awash with brilliance. Our Assistant Editor Laura Green delves into Joan Jonas at Tate Modern, Jesc Bunyard explores the impact of Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ and Jennifer Sauer looks at David Bowie’s legacy.
We’re thrilled to be able to present a retrospective on the career of photographer Gered Mankowitz as our lead feature. The Jimi Hendrix image on the cover has never been seen before. When we first saw the colour ranges we were blown away – not only by the beautiful vivid colours, but also by the incontrovertible fact that Gered actually took the original image. Blown. Away.
Gered takes us behind the scenes of some of his most famous images, and it was amazing to have the opportunity to hear the stories from the man himself.
So turn on and tune in.
