Don’t Miss: Shaped in Mexico at Bargehouse

After Nyne’s Samantha reports on the opening of Shaped in Mexico, a brand new exhibition highlighting some of the most exciting examples of contemporary Mexican and Mexico-inspired art.

The show leads us on an Alice in Wonderland-style exploration of the rawly atmospheric Bargehouse space at London’s Oxo Tower Wharf, drawing us in an upward spiral from the ground floor’s representations of the harsh realities of life in modern Mexico to the fourth floor’s explorations of more spiritual matters. In the course of our ascension, we negotiate a mind-boggling array of artworks and mixture of media – from painted VHS cases to textile representations of the chakras – via found objects, stonework, and even a surrealistic series of images of Alice herself.

Mexican-American artist David Gremard Romero’s work, which aims to reclaim lost elements of native Mexican culture, asks which is the mask – the mask itself, or the face beneath?

A must-see for anyone with an interest in Mexican culture, or, indeed, modern art in any of its forms, this expedition into the intersection between the two is a trip well worth making.
